Michelle contacted us about a year ago and told us she was having two weddings. One in the United States and one in China. The idea was to book us to produce her short highlight film in time to be shown at her wedding in China. Now of course we talked about the details of her wedding and thought about story ideas but it really it me when she told us about folding 1000 paper cranes. Have you ever made one of these before? It’s not easy and most people can’t even do it, but to do a thousand? She told us it was good luck but only if the bride and groom handmade the birds themselves. Her fiancé Xiaoming confesses that he helped a little but would have rather outsourced the job, just like any other guy. This is the theme we chose to weave their story.
The wedding took place at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in West Orange, New Jersey. After hearing about the details of the making the paper cranes, Michelle’s brother was hard at work hanging them as a backdrop to the ceremony location. He describes the moment the bride reached the last bird and just stopped, reminding me of that moment Forrest Gump stops running for no reason, after so many years. Moments before their first look, Michelle and Xiaoming exchange the last two cranes with hand written messages to each other. They chose this instead of the traditional cards that many brides and grooms exchange on the morning of the wedding.
